Shintaro Kaido
Shintaro holds a BS in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Shintaro Kaido's thesis is that scientists can be trained to become scientist entrepreneurs who will launch high-impact, high-growth startups.
Shintaro is Drexel University's inaugural Vice Provost for Innovation. Drexel is a Carnegie R1 classified research institution with over $160 million in research expenditures per year. As Vice Provost, Shintaro leads the design and implementation of Drexel's innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem. In addition to the Vice Provost role, Shintaro is the head of Drexel's tech transfer program. Prior to Drexel, Shintaro launched Oklahoma’s first startup accelerators for i2E which has over $60 million in assets under management. Shintaro led 14 investments for i2E which returned 3.5x DPI at 17.2% IRR. Shintaro also has first-hand experience as a startup operator as co-founder; Synercon Technologies (www.synercontechnologies.com) raised venture funding and was acquired by Dearborn Technologies in 2019.
Shintaro serves on the board of the Ben Franklin Technology Development Authority (BFTDA). BFTDA, on behalf of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, invests in venture capital funds which invest in Pennsylvania startups; Shintaro was appointed to this position by Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf in 2022. Shintaro also serves on the Leadership Council for Activate (activate.org), which tackles global challenges by training scientists to become scientist entrepreneurs through fully supported two-year fellowships. Activate Fellows and their 180 startups have raised over $2 billion since 2015 with two exits. Shintaro delivers the fellowship-wide seminar “Working With Your Tech Transfer Office – What Every Scientist Entrepreneur Should Know”.
Shintaro is a Certified Licensing Professional (CLP) and a Registered Tech Transfer Professional (RTTP). Shintaro resides in Wallingford, PA with his wife Janet, daughter Emma, two cats and six bicycles.
Shintaro is a member of Class 21. He served his fellowship while at Drexel University.
